Style and Tone

The cold vacuum of space is an unforgiving place. A tiny fracture in the hull of a ship can easily grow into a huge rip that depressurises the entire ship and vents the oxygen in space; a small fuel miscalculation and a ship can end up stranded in the vastness of space; or a bullet to the head just when medical supplies have run out… death can come suddenly, without warning and without meaning.

Princess is a dark game. Character death is highly likely to occur, so be prepared for the worst (and take adequate precautions!). Should your character die (in turnsheets or during session), the GMs will of course invite you to create a new one or to play a Non-Player Character or Directed Player Character (of which we will have an assortment ready) and will help to ensure your new character isn't disadvantaged for arriving late. We will ask that you involve a new character in plots unrelated to the plots your previous character was involved in.

The game is about humanity's survival against all odds in a world that is trying its hardest to prevent that. We expect players to work together more than against each other: the game is certainly PvE rather than PvP, though the GMs will accommodate such action.

Princess is also primarily a horror game: we expect (and intend) to bring Player Characters face to face with their deepest fears and have them react accordingly. We don't, however, want to make their players uncomfortable OC: be sure to let the GMs know if there's something you're uncomfortable with and read our statement on what we'll do to ensure players are comfortable.

Princess is set in the not too distant future with a technology level that has not advanced considerably (see History and Current Situation for more information) – the style of this world has been left rather up to your own interpretation: ships in the Fleet are likely to vary from the sleek stylish walls of the The Slipstream to the gritty industrial grinding of The Hephaestus, but the style and societal structure of the Fleet at the time of the start of the game can be found described in Current Situation.

The game has been inspired by a number of sources (affectionately known as the horrifying lovechild of the GM team's experiences). These include, but are not limited to:

  • Battlestar Galactica
  • FTL: Faster Than Light
  • Artemis Spaceship Bridge Simulator
  • Firefly
  • Star Trek
  • Red Dwarf
  • Anything Tom has ever found on Creepypasta
  • Marble Hornets
  • The works of HP Lovecraft
  • Sunless Sea
  • Cabin in the Woods
  • Star Wars
